JOHN BUTCHER / UTE KANNGIESSER / STEVE NOBLE / MANDHIRA DE SARAMCafé Oto, E8 3DL, [Venue Details]
Delighted to host the first OTO performance from this excellent improvising quartet of John Butcher (saxophones), Ute Kanngiesser (cello), Steve Noble (drums) and Mandhira de Saram (violin).
Butcher is well known as a saxophonist who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of time and place. His music ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and unusual acoustics.
Ute Kanngiesser is a London based cellist from Germany. Over the years, she has carefully deconstructed her childhood classical roots and almost exclusively plays unscripted, improvised music. Much of her work has evolved in relationship with other art forms such as poetry, film, and dance.
Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more.
Mandhira is a versatile violinist performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral violinist in the UK and abroad. She is a founding member and the leader of the Ligeti Quartet, a young string quartet which has established a reputation as a leading dynamic and imaginative force in contemporary and modern music.
