Members of brass ensemble Septura and Academy students perform three intriguing but largely neglected works from British, French and American composers, alongside a new work by an Academy student.
The tumultuous overture to Ethel Smyth’s The Wreckerssets the scene for this trailblazing Cornish-set opera. The first opera by a French woman, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre’s Céphale et Procris presents a unique take on the Lullian tradition.
Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha blends Western Classical styles with ragtime to create the first African-American opera. Arrangements by Septura’s Simon Cox and Matthew Knight.
