RCM Chamber Music

Royal College of Music, Performance Hall, SW7 2BS, [Venue Details]

In this rush-hour concert, RCM musicians perform German composer Louis Spohr's Nonet op 31, a celebrated chamber work that was composed in unusual circumstances.

Written in 1813, Spohr’s Nonet in F major was the first work to bear the title of ‘nonet’. Spohr was set a challenge by his patron, Johann Tost, to write a piece for four string instruments and five winds to showcase the character of each instrument.

The resulting piece was so successful that its instrumentation became the standard for subsequently composed nonets.
